At Africology, we are privileged to have talented healers as part of our family, and it is our joy to share their stories and insights with you. Tabitha works at The Africology at Maslow, and we asked her to share the story of her journey as a therapist. Her wonderful story is below.
I qualified as a beauty therapist nearly 20 years ago! I was trained by the fabulous Cindy Brown, at Cindy's Beauty Therapy School in Harare, Zimbabwe. Mrs B, as we affectionately called her, made therapy fun, interesting and practical. I loved it.
I realised early on in my career that clients came to a spa for more than just massage. More often than not, they wanted to talk, to unburden themselves, to vent, to laugh, to get someone else's point of view, and to get a great massage
Africology Spa was the first spa that really challenged me as a therapist to "know" that a client is more than just a person in need of a massage; to understand that when I have a client laying on my bed, I have been gifted with a soul whole and sacred, and that it is an honour and a privilege to be entrusted with their body.
We have a signature treatment called The Shaman's Journey. As well as balancing the 7 chakras, the client also receives an hour's massage. This journey was my light bulb moment. It was so much outside my comfort zone that I had to pray about it. I realized and understood that I can bring God into my treatment room, to help me heal my clients; to talk, laugh, cry, counsel, and give a great massage.
So, when my client tells me that was the best massage they've ever had, I know I have done my job. When my client leaves the room crying, and laughing, and comes back to give me a hug and says ‘thank you!’, then I know this is my calling, my journey.
